Navigation Pause

by Jean-Claude D

Description

Add a navigation  PAUSE button. On a trip, if I decide to stop at a fast food place, using a pause would stop provide directions, without canceling the trip.

Once un-paused, the navigation would resume with corrections to continue the trip from the un-paused location.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

In this example, it  would keep navigation from telling you directions while you are trying to order in the drive thru line.

Moderator: Alternative today is to select Cancel. To resume, select Navigation and pick the last destination from the history list.

Show Current Wind Direction

by Exyll

Description

In Tesla Waze you can enable weather and this will show the wind direction at the car its position but also shows the wind speed in the lower right corner. This better helps in understanding why energy consumption is higher of lower then expected.

Integrate PlugShare into Map

by Matt W

Description

When displaying charging, include compatible Plugshare locations too.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

The interactive map in the car currently can display Supercharger locations. It would be nice if Tesla would partner with PlugShare to show other charging locations on the map as well. These third-party stations should be shown in a different color from the Superchargers — as the PlugShare app itself does. Tesla could also show the detailed location notes and user-submitted photos from PlugShare, as these often make finding the charging station easier than Tesla’s own nearly nonexistent notes.

Navigation probably should not attempt to utilize third-party charging stations. Such stations would be available for manual selection only.

The map button that enables/disables the Superchargers map overlay should be extended to become a tri-state button: hide all chargers, show only Superchargers, show all chargers.

No Map Auto-zoom to Default

by Roelf

Description

When you zoom in (or out) on the map while navigating, the map application returns to the default zoom level after a while.  I’d prefer it not return unless requested.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

Previously it only returned to the default zoom level after a tap on the icon which selects the view (trip, north up, driving direction).

Voice Navigate to Contact

by VValleyEV

Description

Navigate to any name in your contacts list by using voice command.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

To minimize unintended consequences of always including the Contacts list in the search for “Navigate to” or “Where is”, I suggest making this voice command “Navigate to Contact X”, where X is the contact name. Else the current functionality of searching the internet for restaurants etc. may many wrong hits.

To make it really useful, the feature needs to bring up a list of possible matches when it can’t find a correct match in your contacts based on the spelling of the name it comes up with from your voice.

There is a tedious workaround that can show you how well the feature might work: navigate using touchscreen from a contact, cancel the navigation, then add that recent one to the “navigation” favorites list, changing the name of the favorite to the contact name, which of course you have to do manually. Once you have taken all of those steps, you can absolutely “Navigate to X” for that contact name, IF it can get the spelling correct.

GPS Speed Limit Feedback

by Ticket

Description

Have a means to signal Tesla that the GPS indicated speed limit is wrong for a section of road so that with enough crowdsourced input, the database can be corrected.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

Sometimes the GPS based speed limits are wrong and the autopilot may trigger a slow down for a false speed limit, or be set too high in a radar zone, or be wrong in a work in progress place. For example :

  • near Paris, there is the A86 duplex. a tunnel at 70 km/h, at one point it crosses a road perpendicularly, but 30 meters above which is at 50 km/h. The autopilot brakes in the tunnel here, which is not nice and dangerous.
  • The A13 freeway is at 110km/h and 130 km/h, but the GPS data knows it only at 130 km/h. Quite annoying.

This would be great to have a feedback ability in the car, just like in the waze app to signal impossible routes, and wrong speed limit without having to wait for the cameras to be able to take care of what it reads. We can currently let voice commanded notes about that, (start a command with “note” or “bug report” and say your feedback) but it doesn’t look like it is put into the system.

Google maps and waze look like they have better speed limits data records. Openstreetmaps are taking an enormous advantage of crowdsourced feedback, Tesla should also use this power.

  • This would need some UI commands in the navigation app, (a button and a menu to tap what we want to feedback about, in a first version just about the speed limit, we would enter the correct speed. the copilot could be a great help on that) and an API to store the feedback. the Note voice command could be reused here.
  • Enough feedback on a road would automatically change the speed limit for a place, too divergent feedback speed limits would trigger a requirement to be validated by a human.

Nav Charge View – No Zoom Out

by Martin

Description

On the Nav screen, when you select the Charge view (lightning bolt icon), do not zoom out.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

I frequently look for a charger nearby. It might be a charge point that I already know but want to navigate to, based on traffic. It might be that I am in a city, approaching where I want to go and looking for a charger nearby. What I find annoying is that when I click on the change point view of the map (the little lightning bolt) the map zooms way out. I have to zoom it back in then. Typically all this happens in the city with traffic going on and every click that I don’t have to do helps to keep my focus on the road.

Description

When using navigation, and a turn is expected when following a navigation route, have the turn signal automatically activate (as an option).  Should also turn off after turn is complete.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

Since the S-Type does nearly everything for me (headlight high beams, automatic wipers, etc.) I have become very lazy.

This might, I suspect,  automatically improve the level of courtesy shown by Tesla drivers to the benefit of all road users.

Description

Add a compass to the instrument cluster display, perhaps only when the instrument cluster has an active navigation screen or as another left/right app.

Perhaps the display would appear as floating hemispherical type compass.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

Moderator: A compass already appears in the top-right of the main navigation screen when the map is oriented to where the car is pointed.

Keep App Buttons Option

by wogamax

Description

Provide an option to never hide the app buttons and top notification bar.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

In version 8.0, it is always automatically hidden by the map and requires an extra tap to get to the apps and see the entire notification bar.

Multi-Point Nav for Energy Planning

by MJT

Description

The navigation system helps determine if you have enough energy to get to your destination. It would help if you could add an additional destination to your trip to determine how much energy (or additional time charging) would be needed to go to all points.

Trip Plan from PC to Car

by Brian S

Description

Have the ability to plan a trip on a PC (i.e. at home) or via a Tesla browser portal and download the multi-stop plan to the car’s navigation.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

Would really like the luxury of being able to sit at my desk; or perhaps my couch with tablet, plan a trip, and then send that trip plan to the car.

Additionally, once you plan your trip, and push it to the car, the car would know to engage the additional battery charging for “trip-capacity” right before your trip (early enough depending on the real-time charging amperage).

If the car knew it was on a trip, additional car behavior could also be influenced, such as residual climate (leaving on AC/heat) during Supercharging stops.

I’d imagine that any private aircraft pilots would associate this concept with a “flight plan” filed with the FAA as would any south Florida boaters that file “float plans” with CBP before heading off to the Bahamas on their private vessel.

Also, for anyone that enjoyed the now-deprecated Chrome-to-Phone app, this would be a similar concept.  Chrome-to-phone offered a browser plug-in that would take whatever web page or map you were looking at and send it to your Android-based phone, with the click of a single button, so that you’d have what you need while mobile. Many people used this for trip-planning.

Moderator: As an interim trick today – You can create multiple calendar entries, each with a destination address. In the car after the calendar syncs, you have a list of each address that only requires a single click to start the navigation for each address.

Nav Charge at Destination Awareness

by James

Description

The Nav system should know if your destination has a charger (from prior usage) or have a option to tell it the destination has a charger. When routing, it would better plan what charging may be needed enroute.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

In some cases the current design may route through an unnecessary Supercharger when it doesn’t know you will be charging at the destination.

Show Next Cross Street

by Peter

Description

Next to the current street, have a continuously updated next cross street. It would help finding the next turn when not using navigation.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

This seems usual in Mazda GPS and is quite convenient.
