Automated Map Orientation

by dbop

Description

Currently, the map has 3 viewing options: north-up, heading/guidance, and trip.  Change this to remember the user’s map-viewing preference for different activities:

  1. Car in Park
  2. Driver searching for destination (i.e. typing or viewing list of destination results).
  3. Car in gear (or even possibly neutral).

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

Personally, I would configure these to 1)north-up, 2) north-up 3)heading/guidance. It would not require any UI changes.

Show More Street Names on Map

by Al

Description

At each zoom level add more street names than are currently shown.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

When I’m in a residential neighborhood or other similar locations, hardly any street names are shown on the nav map other than maybe 3 or 4.  I’d like higher contrast names too.

Moderator: As the maps are rendered by Google, it’s not clear that Tesla can do much here.  Perhaps Tesla can feedback suggestions to Google.

Autopilot Slows in Icy Conditions

by dbop

Description

If ice conditions are detected by outside temps, traction control slippage detection, and perhaps weather reports, reduce the Autopilot speed below the speed limit.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

Winter is coming.  Often ice at intersections gets polished by people spinning their tires.  Also multi-car pile-ups on highways.  It would be nice for TACC/AP to drive more slowly based on road conditions, traffic reports, etc.

I don’t know how they do it, but use info like this maybe: https://roadreports.ama.ab.ca/

This is really complicated, but worth a lot too.  On an icy winter day, we can have 100+ car accidents in my city alone.

Supercharger Queue System

by Gartz

Description

Version 1

Display how many cars that had set the supercharger as the destination are stopped in the destination before the car gets charged.

Version 2

Add the queue position, as the car arrives in the area of the supercharger that is fully in use, it starts showing the current number of your position in the queue of cars, as the cars in front of the queue start charging the queue number is subtracted until it displays “your turn to supercharge your Tesla”

Version 3

Add the information about the letter and number of the supercharger spot that will be released in the next 5 mins and it’s “reserved” for the current car in the next spot of the queue.

Version 4

Add queue prediction and time estimation. Now that most of the Teslas are using the previous versions of the queue system, it will be possible to implement a prediction system based on the ETA of cars going towards the supercharger, how many cars are charging and their status, how many cars are already in the queue waiting in the location to be charged. After the driver select the supercharger destination this information about ETA to start charging and total time should be displayed in the screen with a button to accept, therefore the UI should display and track the information as the car drivers towards the destination and indicate his exact position of the queue when arriving in the supercharger.

Version 5

Cars that respect the queue should get incentives like:

  • Charger price discounts
  • More chances in the referral program
  • Monthly prize draws

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

I believe that better than punish the ones that don’t behave well and disrespect queues, is to incentive with good things the ones that respect the others, this will bring positive marketing to Tesla and satisfaction to the clients to feel that they’re doing something good to others, therefore, Tesla does something good for us.

Map Auto Center after Timeout

by Ticket

Description

When you move the map manually, after a set time, automatically resume the last North-Up or Headings Up setting to re-sync the map to your current location.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

Sometimes we must touch the map screen to look around. The main GPS map does not switch back automatically to the North-Up or Headings Up mode, which is annoying.

When the car gets within five miles of a Supercharger (or tapping on the Supercharger icon on the map) show the status such as many cars are connected, which stalls they reside, and how much time each has to go to reach charge setting. This could be done in-car and in the phone app.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

None.

Status

Partly implemented (shows if Supercharger is non-functional).

Extra Charge Info on Map

by Moderator

Description

At each visited charge location, record type of charger and voltage/current/power that you got from that location.  When you tap on the charged icon on the map, it would display this additional information.

Description

After setting up a navigation route – allow options to change the route and/or insert waypoints of additional planned stops along the way.

This is particularly useful when you know a faster route for a portion of the trip that auto-routing avoided since it’s not a freeway.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

Common in many navigation systems, but does add some complexity to the usability.

Save Maps to Memory

by hezi

Description

Since the mapping app is web based, and due to the speed of the 3G, it take longer for the map to load. Most of us are using our car in a specific area, and just like in Google maps, an option to save the map to the device (car) memory would make the user interface much faster and smoother. This may be an easy fix (software upgrade), and maps, just like in Google, would have an expiration date when the user would have to reload/refresh the maps to deal with any potential changes.

I live in a dense urban area and use the maps mainly to check traffic.  On many occasions I find myself waiting for the maps to loads while zooming in or out or when starting to drive. This condition lead me to use my phone like I did when I was driving my trusty Toyota Tacoma. My phone is reacting so much faster than the car. And yes, I have 4G LTE and the maps are saved to my phone.

I wish Tesla will provide a fix so I can use this beautiful screen instead of my phone .

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

Tesla already does limited caching of maps, but it may require more memory than is available.  It’s also not clear how separate traffic information is from the maps – they may be bound together by Google.

Provide an option to save the current location into the list of Favorite nav locations (beyond Home and Work).

I’m not sure what the exact GPS term is, but on my old Garmin GPS I was able to push the screen at a current location to create a new favorite place. I would love to be able to do that in my Tesla.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

This is available in many in-car and stand-alone GPS products.

Map Scale Indicator

by Volker.Berlin

Description

Yesterday I was doing a nice “Sunday drive”, just roaming the area around Berlin. I did not start with a full battery, but returned completely empty (within 10 km)… 😉 The 17″ map view with live traffic did a marvelous job replacing a traditional map, but one omission stuck out like a sore thumb: It was surprisingly difficult to estimate distances, and only after a while did I understand what was missing: A graphical scale representation.

Zooming in and out is so easy, that it’s equally easy to lose track of the scale you’re looking at. Every paper map on the planet has a black and white line that represents the length of some base unit (like 10 km). This element is missing in Tesla’s map view. It would be a minor addition that would greatly enhance the usefulness of the map view. Web-based Google Maps has it in the small status bar in the lower right corner of the view; for in-car use, I would prefer a more salient representation of this same element.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

Common on most navigation systems.

The time estimate for routes in navigation should factor in traffic from the map, similar what is shown in Google Maps when it provides drive instructions with drive times based on current traffic conditions.

Scroll Wheel Map Zoom

by ks-man

Description

For the right scroll wheel button you should be able to control the zoom in and out of the map if it is highlighted on the 17″ display.  It is pretty common to zoom in our out based on what you need to see and it would be quicker and safer to have this as an option on the wheel rather than only controlled on the screen.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

None.

Status

Update: While scroll zoom is not yet implemented, pinch to zoom was added in v5.8, which reduces the need for this feature.

Description

When displaying the Superchargers, change the icons and notes to indicate how many total stations are at the location and how many are available (not in use).

Also would be nice to show actual superchargers with a different icon or color than non-superchargers (the in-car map with v4.5 software) shows all charging locations at the same.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

Status

The 7.1 software release includes Supercharger status on the icon. A tap shows additional details about closures and other issues.
