Trip Planning via Web

by jw-charged

Description

The Trip Planning function in the car is great, but when planning a trip, it would be much easier to be able to plan a trip on a computer while sitting in your home or office that updates the in-car plan.

Add System Memory

by Fred Erickson

Description

Allow adding system memory by inserting a USB flash drive.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

For new features requiring more storage/memory, maybe a large USB  drive could be inserted into one of the USB ports.  Flash drives are available at least 1TB now. That should store about anything.

A very cheap way to add memory for memory intensive features (download Google map files, voice recognition, etc.)

Moderator: Currently the car has 16-32 GB of memory, which seems to be sufficient for all the current features. Auto-pilot cars may have additional memory.

Description

When navigating, offer a map display mode that shows the current location and the destination. As you move closer to the destination the map would automatically zoom in to show more detail yet keep both current location and destination on the map.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

I do this manually. It’s useful for reviewing the live traffic situation and having an intuitive feel for avoiding congestion. Navigation is a good tool but no algorithm beats the human brain for looking at the big picture.

Description

After setting up a navigation route – allow options to change the route and/or insert waypoints of additional planned stops along the way.

This is particularly useful when you know a faster route for a portion of the trip that auto-routing avoided since it’s not a freeway.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

Common in many navigation systems, but does add some complexity to the usability.

This is a software only solution, but may require work with Google’s APIs/Maps.

Save Maps to Memory

by hezi

Description

Since the mapping app is web based, and due to the speed of the 3G, it take longer for the map to load. Most of us are using our car in a specific area, and just like in Google maps, an option to save the map to the device (car) memory would make the user interface much faster and smoother. This may be an easy fix (software upgrade), and maps, just like in Google, would have an expiration date when the user would have to reload/refresh the maps to deal with any potential changes.

I live in a dense urban area and use the maps mainly to check traffic.  On many occasions I find myself waiting for the maps to loads while zooming in or out or when starting to drive. This condition lead me to use my phone like I did when I was driving my trusty Toyota Tacoma. My phone is reacting so much faster than the car. And yes, I have 4G LTE and the maps are saved to my phone.

I wish Tesla will provide a fix so I can use this beautiful screen instead of my phone .

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

Tesla already does limited caching of maps, but it may require more memory than is available.  It’s also not clear how separate traffic information is from the maps – they may be bound together by Google.

Add Info to Nav Display

by Thom EM

Description

Add ETA, remaining distance (from navigation), and projected range (from energy panel) to the instrument panel navigation display. This would help free drivers from the touchscreen for purposes or monitoring progress and energy adequacy. The request reflects my practice of comparing these values, which would be eased if they all appeared together in a one stop center on the instrument panel, instead of being spread around the instrument panel, energy panel, and map display.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

This is purely a software change so relatively cheap and retrofitable. It might be tricky to find room for a line of data like this on the navigation display, but my sense is that it is not too difficult.

Improve Nav Sharpness

by Elephant

Description

This 17″ display is not clear at all. Every street name is gray instead of black and sharpness is about 3 on a scale from 1 to 10. I don’t know if it’s changeable, I think it is. Let me give you an example:  Apple MacBook Pro regular and with Retina display. That’s what I am talking about. You can clearly see sharp letters and numbers on Retina display comparing to a regular display.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

Some improvement may be possible with a different or higher contrast font. For significant improvement, a higher resolution display would be required.
