Description

When regen braking is limited due to battery level or temperature, add limited mechanical brakes to supplement the regen braking.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

This would result in a consistent driving experience regardless of the state of the battery. In addition, this could be used to provide a hold stopping mode for older vehicles that can’t fully stop with regen braking.

Have an option to use only regen when Autopilot needs to brake, if safe to do so.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

When you’re on autopilot or adaptive cruise control, and your car needs to come to a stop (either because there’s a slowing or stopped vehicle in front of you or it’s automatically stopping for a stop light/sign), I notice that the car appears to use the brake calipers in addition to regen braking (above 5 mph).

To increase the lifespan of the friction brakes, I prefer it to only use regen unless the other vehicle is stopping harder than expected.  Many times I’ll disconnect AP so I can manually use regen – meaning I’m starting the deceleration process sooner than the Tesla would.  I understand in my older Model S, it only regens down to about 5 mph so brakes would be required for a complete stop.

Collect statistics over time of actual brake usage vs. slowing using regeneration. This can be used to improve efficiency by having the driver improve use of regen over braking.

Parking Sensor Automatic Brake

by RG

When the parking sensors detect a close object that the car may hit while traveling at very slow speed, automatically apply the brake so the object is not hit. (Collision avoidance is a different feature for higher speeds using the radar).

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

Currently, Models S will warn you if you are too close to an object. However, Model S will not auto brake  to avoid  hitting an object such a garbage can when going very slow. Other cars have this feature.

Moderator: One reason this feature might be problematic if the parking sensor fails (which can occur if a large bug hits the sensor or ice buildup). We were unable to find any vehicle that offers this feature, but our search was not exhaustive.

Brake Light Hash Indicator

by donsch

Description

As most probably know, regenerative braking causes the brake lights to come on at varying points depending on speed.

I would like a little red hash mark on the edge of the dial to indicate the point when the brake lights will come on.  At which point the hash should glow a brighter red while brake lights are on.

The reason for this is I’m sure we are all unknowing “brake checking” people which can be a source of road rage.  If I knew exactly when the brake lights would come on, I would only regen just shy of activating the brake lights in most cases.

This feature would help Model S drivers be more aware of what their car is saying to the drivers around them.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

Moderator: We don’t believe this feature is technically possible. The brake lights come on at a specific g-force, and has little to do with speed. While regeneration has some relation to g-force, it’s also not direct. For example, you could have major regen going down a hill, yet insufficient g-forces to trigger the brake lights.

Description

When regen “kicks in” it is more abrupt than (for example) the smooth ramp implemented for the accelerator.  At the risk of being too technical, the 3rd and 4th derivatives of position-vs-time should be smoothed/reduced to eliminate a bit of the “regen jerk”.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

Software implementation may be complex, but should be a no-cost improvement.

Status

Implemented in version 4.2 software.
