Map – Points of Interest

186

Now Implemented!

Description

For the maps include Points Of Interest (POI) with options to select categories such as Supercharger stations, general charging stations, service stations, restaurants, fast-food, grocery stores, hardware stores, parks, monuments, etc.

Ideally when POI is active, the items would appear on the map as icons, related to the type, and some may even show the brand. For example, if Hardware was selected, the icons could represent Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware, etc.

It should be easy to activate/deactivate POI, since it can clutter the map if zoomed out and/or there are many hits for a location, as commonly occurs with the restaurant category.

Touching a POI icon should bring up more info about the POI and may include buttons to phone and/or Route to the location. A plus is a link to the related website and/or search for more on the POI.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

Most high-end navigation systems include POI. The Lexus implementation is one of the better ones. POI databases are generally stored locally and require a map/POI update purchase periodically to get current info. Lexus charges about $250 for an update.

Status

Available since about 2018.  This includes both charging stations and other POIs.

Yes again, just like my Lexus.  Rest areas are a must on Interstates.

This could grow as tesla owners add their own POI from the car and let it upload into the system for other to share in.  But please do something clever.

Big vote for me.  The maps/navigation are just horrible and should at least include EV stations (not just superchargers.  Would be great to have a popup around a destination that indicates where EV parking spaces are when a search is first entered.  Annoying to get to a destination, then have to look at my phone app (recargo or plugshare) to then get parking/ev info.

Maps should also be in 3D and include ZAGAT or Yelp overlay of restaurants.

And lose the google map partnership.  Those maps are awful.  Something like this would be great and more in keeping with Tesla innovation:

In the mean time, you can still use the built-in web browser to find POIs, including Google Maps and other services. As for Tesla's sat nav, I can easily see them integrating Google Places in the not-too-distant future.

My 2006 Toyota Prius offers this. I can even activate them via voice navigation. For example, if I say "Ice cream parlor" the car displays ice cream parlor icons (yes, it actually does this). I can then tap on an icon and call it or navigate to it. It also displays the logos of various companies. I imagine the "gas station" command is not so useful though on the Tesla :)
