Headlights Mode Memory

58

Description

Keep the last headlights state (on/off/auto) until changed by the user.

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

We should have the option to choose which headlight/parking lights mode is used when starting the car: headlights on, parking lights, or AUTO. Currently, it always starts in AUTO.

Some countries require lights to be kept on even during the daytime.

From pa30pete:  I would like to have the choice of keeping them off permanently until I change the setting.

I would agree with this option only if you could select it for certain locations (say home)  My wife is highly sensitive to contrasting lights and LED lights even more so (as are many Sjogren's and Ehlers Danlos patients.)

Absolutely agree with LogOfZero.

Using low beams and rear lights all the time increases visibility and security dramatically. Particularly here in Norway where the weather is often grey.

I would like an option to let me select whether AUTO mode should use keep front and rear lights on all the time when the car is in use.

I would agree with you about your security risk comments if Tesla would reduce the sensitivity of the auto-on function.  I find that my headlights come on practically every time I start my car, even on a sunny day!  I know that our type of headlights last longer but they cost a fortune to replace. My rote startup routine has become:  Get rid of the music screen and turn off the headlights.

This is a big security risk if not being forced to On or Auto when driving.

In the last 10 years I have nearly collided twice while passing, because of oncoming cars driving without any lights. Dark cars on grey roads in the dark. Not because the driver is suicidal, but he simply forgot and the car allowed him to forget.

Here driving lights are mandatory, and should never be allowed to be off while the car is driving. Cars where it is possible to turn off lights and drive are surely responsible for deaths each year.

I'm old school. Headlights on in the daytime always meant "Clear the way, I'm having an emergency!"

I find Daytime Running Lights annoying, dazzling, and a waste of energy, bulb life, and annoying as Hell if I am trying to leave my home in the dark without lighting up the neighbor's house. And yes, I know, LED's have nearly forever life, but a watt is a watt...

I have successfully defeated them in every car I have owned. Will probably use the same circuit when I get my new Model 3 later this month.

Seems odd that "Auto" and not "Off" is the default position. Perhaps thought to be a safety issue, but I think most drivers know when to turn their headlights on - they've done so for years. Particularly not necessary in countries where daylight running lights are the law (which themselves seem to have been more of a hazrd than help, with some drivers thinking their headlights are on when they're not, so they have no rear lights).

A friend of mine with a Model 3 just prefers to have his headlights on all the time while driving.  He thinks it's just safer that way.  But, that means that every time he gets in his car, he has to go and turn them on.   He would like for there to be a "persistent" checkbox there so that  it automatically turns on the headlights whenever he gets in (regardless of time of day) and automatically turns them off when he gets out.  So simple yet...

As stated above the default to AUTO on the exterior lights always turns on the headlights in the garage when I start the car. Also during the daylight hours if it is cloudy or raining I prefer to use the PARKING setting rather than AUTO which may turn on the headlights. I would suggest that the default setting be changed from AUTO to what ever the last setting the driver manually selects. This would eliminate the headlights always turning on automatically in the garage. Also if it is cloudly or raining during the day I would not be required to constantly change the setting to PARKING  if that is the setting I prefer.

... which suggests an even smarter option:

The car knows where it is, so it should be able to turn on lights all the time when it knows it is in a country that legally requires lights to be turned on all the time!
