I don't know about you guys, but my back window manages to stay quite clean... maybe place the backup camera in the back window.

Or maybe make it heated so that water/snow comes off.  Dust probably isn't too much of a concern.

This is a problem on my X, in rain, the rear cam is frequently so splattered with dirty water that the image is practically useless.  The cam on my 2008 RX400h, on the other hand, doesn't ever seem to get anywhere near that compromised.  Camera placement?

Or perhaps there could be a little cover that slides back or clamshell opens when the camera view is required.  When water drops or dirt is on the lens, it renders the view ineffective.  How will FSD function correctly with no rear view?

I like the jet of air to clean the lens.
... run a tube from the tire valve stem ... ;-)

Tried covering the lens with rain-x, which is slightly hydrophobic. No detectable effect on dirt, dirty water or snow (naturally).

A Hydrophobic lens sounds good, but would that stop dirt/snow as well? I have a reverse camera on my current car and it gets really dirty, mostly from water splashing up off the road, so I guess it would? I agree about the Norway snow video, the back of the car gets covered.

As small as the camera is, a hydrophobic lens coating would be much more practical to keep the lens clear. An air blaster/water washer would be much ado about almost nothing.

Ditto snow - looking at the Norwegian videos of the rear of Teslas covered in snow.

  • NISSAN has a clever solution: self cleaning rear camera with water and air ;-)

  • alternative could be a closed system, where the camera is protected unless you reverse and the camera will be unhidden; this would allow to use the camera only when reversing  :-(

Possible alternative is to better shield it from splatter. Are there windshield squeegees and towels at Superchargers? ;=)
