If you are planning a round trip where the destination does not have charging you need the route planner to figure out where and how long to charge on the way there so that you have enough charge not only to get to the destination but to get back to the next charger on the way home.

Status

According to Elon, Tesla is working on adding waypoints, which may handle this scenario.
