Open Garage Door with Tesla App

54

Now Implemented!

Description

Since the Model S already has the hardware to open the garage door remotely, it might be handy if the Tesla App would allow to trigger the open command broadcast as well. If you lock yourself out of your own house and you know the Tesla is in the garage, just pop the Smartphone and open the door remotely!

Competitive/Pricing/Notes

There are Smartphone solutions to open the garage door remotely, but they require a connected garage door opener. Don’t know of any car with the feature though.

Status

Implemented with V10 (Oct-2019).

There are third party software like Remote S with this option but to trigger it the car has to be near the door. This is a very good option to have. Once we were away from home and an electrician needed to access our garage for some work. I used the app to open the garage door for him from 5000 miles away.

I do not understand this one - the ability to open the garage door from the app has been there for ages.

Just go into the Summon screen and once connected press the little house button in the top right of the screen.

The Tesla could tell if the garage door was "up" or "down" with a combination of camera and radar.   The APP should be able to give a view of the back and front of the car and could easily detect changes.

The whole point of HomeLink is to avoid having to use the Garage Opener fob. Just press the HomeLink button on the main screen. But what about when you first go to get your car. Would you not STILL have to take the garage opener fob with you. So if you have to have it with you to open the garage to get to the car in the first place, then its likely to be attached to the car keys! I think a button on the App would be very helpful addition.

Craftsman and Quirky + GE I know for sure have made apps that can open and close your garage door(s) from your mobile device.  Tesla would have to beat its heart out to get garage door opener companies to engineer garage door openers that can be opened/closed via the Tesla app.  This feature may not seem complicated to make happen, but Elon Musk would beg to differ.

I use an Insteon Hub and garage door kit.  Unfortunately, the Tesla (from remote) would never know if the door was up or down.  The Hub gives me that feedback.  I can also control all of my lights, blinds, fireplace, etc. and know if they are actually on or off.

I use the solution at http://mydooropener.com/ which gives me control form an app. I see the idea about using the built in HomeLink in the car triggered from the Tesla app, though. :-)

I don't think this is a requirement for the car and app to solve.  Solutions exist to solve this: keypads on the outside of garage doors that send the open signal for you.
